Why is it important to volunteer?

I will be talking about why it is so important to volunteer. I believe that it is so important to volunteer because many organizations could not run without the help of volunteers like the soup kitchen or the animal shelter. Organizations like the soup kitchen and the animal shelter are places that people depend on to help them through their tough times. Maine has one of the highest community service rates with 51% of the younger population volunteering in 2009. If we keep going at this rate we will never have a problem with finding people willing to do community service.

Donating a small amount of your time!

I have volunteered at many places including the soup kitchen, animal shelter, and a nursing home, but recently I volunteered for an event called 100 for 100. 100 for 100 was an event were disadvantaged children were nominated to receive 100 dollars to spend a Dicks Sporting Goods. I was given the job of helping a seven year old pick out things he wanted or needed. This seven year old was one of the nicest children I have ever met. I later found out that he watched his mother pass away.

This really impacted me because I would have never realized that a little boy could be so polite and respectful after seeing his mother pass away in the manner that she did. After volunteering at that event I realized that, that is why I enjoy volunteering. It’s nice to know that you made someone else’s day by just donating a small amount of your time.

How to get in to commuinty service

There are many different ways someone can get in to doing community service, or volunteering. I have found that the easiest and efficient way to volunteer is to go to the place you would like to volunteer and ask if they need any volunteers. Most places like you to fill out an application and then they will make times for you to come in and volunteer.
Popular places to volunteer

·         Library
·         Soup Kitchen
·         Nursing Home

Giving back during the holidays

                                     . Community Service.
With it now being December I feel that it is important to give back to the ones who need it. Volunteering is something that interests me because I enjoy helping people that need a helping hand.  It is a nice feeling to have after you have helped someone or did something for a charity because it’s nothing out of your pocket you’re just donating a little bit of time. Giving back to the community started to interest me a few years ago because my mom made me volunteer at the soup kitchen. This made me realize that there are a lot of people out there who need help and could use two seconds of your time.  Just giving two seconds of your time to a person that needs it can make them feel much better about their situation.
